Finasteride is more commonly known and seen under the brand name Propecia and is available as a prescription only form of hair loss medication. Even though Propecia is the more common name of the two, the medication itself is Finasteride and you will pay less for the exact same product if you avoid purchasing the branded version.
Finasteride has been used to aid in treating hair loss since the early 1990’s and is part of a group of medicines known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors.
To test the effectiveness of Finasteride on hair loss, a highly extensive medical trial spanning 5 years was conducted in an attempt to identify the long term effects caused by continued use of the medication, as well as finding any shorter term effects and the results across both time-frames. Once the 5 year trial period was complete, the results were overwhelmingly positive.
In total, approximately 90% of the men who had been involved in the trial experienced positive results from the medication. Approximately 42% of those involved experienced renewed hair growth where they had previously been balding and approximately another 48% noticed that their hair loss had stopped and that they were losing no more hair.
Not only did the 5 year trial of Finasteride give the conclusion that it is an incredibly successful solution for hair loss in men, but also that it aided in improving the overall condition of the hair with many of the candidates stating that their hair was noticeably thicker and stronger than before.
