For women with smaller breasts, a breast reduction surgery is something that will probably never cross their mind, but for women with larger breasts in can become a daily thought and can quite literally feel like having a weight lifted off their chest.
Having large breasts can cause terrible back, shoulder and neck pain to women, as well as giving them difficulty when trying to exercise and several other negative side effects just for being the way that they were born, so having the ability to have a breast reduction surgery can bring around so many benefits for both their physical and mental health. So what do you need to know before you book yourself in for a consultation?
Eventually, you’ll feel amazing…
A large number of studies performed on women who have had cosmetic surgery performed have found that those who opt for a breast reduction surgery have some of the highest satisfaction rates of all cosmetic surgeries, commonly giving a huge boost to self-esteem, physical health and their own body image.
…but you will be out of action for a little while
Breast reduction surgery itself normally only takes a couple of hours to perform but it’s very likely that you’ll feel tired and sore after the procedure for at least a few days, plan ahead and make sure that you give yourself ample time to recover.
You may not be able to choose an exact cup size
Exactly how much your breast size can be reduced by depends on the starting size of your breasts, their natural composition and the goals you are looking to achieve. This will all be discussed during your initial consultation, but we normally find that most of our breast reduction surgery patients tend to only go down one or two cup sizes.
You get a breast lift as part of the package
If you were to simply remove out the excess tissue causing the breasts to be the size they are, you’d be left with quite a bit of excess skin which really wouldn’t look good so during the procedure, the surgeon will actually perform a breast lift as well. This means that they will remove some additional excess tissue, the excess skin and in some cases even reposition the nipples to give a natural appearance to your new breasts.
It will leave a scar
As with any invasive surgery, there will be scarring afterwards. For this kind of surgery, the incision wounds tend to circle around the nipples and then go down to the bottom of the breasts and will be swollen for a while afterwards. Although they will improve over time, you will always have the scars for your surgery.
You might lose a bit of sensation in your nipples
Straight after a breast reduction surgery, it’s very likely that your nipples will feel numb. Sensation usually does come back, but it can take a couple of months for this to happen. There are some surgical techniques that are more likely to preserve nipple sensation so make sure that you speak to your surgeon about this during your consultation if it is an issue for you.
Its possible that it might affect your ability to breastfeed
There is roughly a 50% chance that women who have breast reduction surgery may find it difficult, although not completely impossible, to breastfeed in future. It’s incredibly hard to predict who this could affect so if you are planning on having a child and wish to breastfeed, speak to the surgeon during your consultation about this and they will provide you with advice.
