Beard Transplants
Facial hair transplants
Restoring hair to the goatee, moustache, beard and sideburns
Transplantation of facial hair is a procedure which restores hair to areas where the growth of hair is either thin or missing entirely. Whilst this procedure is more commonly carried out on the goatee and moustache areas, however it can also be performed for the majority of beard area, sideburns and cheeks. Facial hair transplants are also commonly used to conceal acne scars and other facial scars.
Loss of facial hair occurs for a number of reasons including laser hair removal, electrolysis, surgery, burns, injury or simply as a result of genetics. The majority of of goals from this type of procedure vary from a minor filling in or thin coverage of a small area all the way through to a full restoration of a thick full goatee or beard area. The procedure itself can be performed and carried out on areas where there is little to no hair or on areas where hair growth is thin and the client desires more fullness.
On a client to client basis, the number of individual grafts that is required for the treatment can vary but as an average benchmark, the number of grafts per treatment are as follows;
- 350-500 grafts for the moustache area
- 600-700 grafts for the full goatee area
- 200-250 grafts for each sideburn
- 300-700 grafts for a cheek
While not a common occurrence, some patients request and require a second procedure to transplant additional grafts to achieve a thicker density with their beard.
As with a regular hair transplant procedure, the donor hairs for a facial hair transplant are extracted from the back or sides of the scalp. The choice of site is usually dependent on which offers the closest match to the facial hair structure. Once transplanted, the hairs are permanent and typically will grow as if they are natural facial hair, providing similar texture and other characteristics. The transplanted hair, once grown, can be shaved as you would with the rest of you facial hair without any adverse consequences.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a beard transplant and who is it suitable for?
A beard transplant is a surgical procedure to enhance or restore facial hair growth, suitable for individuals with sparse or patchy beards, or scarring affecting beard growth.
What does the beard transplant procedure entail?
How long is the recovery period post-beard transplant?
How do beard transplants compare to other methods of facial hair growth?
Beard transplants provide a more permanent solution to sparse facial hair compared to topical treatments like Minoxidil or over-the-counter supplements. Unlike other methods, beard transplants do not require ongoing maintenance as the transplanted hair follicles are not susceptible to hormonal factors causing hair loss.
What are the risks associated with beard transplants?
The risks associated with beard transplants include infection, scarring, and unsatisfactory results. However, these risks are minimized when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon.
