FUT Hair Restoration
At Better Hair Transplant Clinics we’re experts in FUT hair restoration surgeries and have carried these out for a vast number of our patients. This leading method of hair transplantation is incredibly technical and one of the most effective ways to get the most value and life out of each individual donor hair.
What is FUT?
FUT, which stands for follicular unit transplantation, is one of the most common and popular forms of hair restoration. Also known as “strip harvesting”, FUT allows our surgeon to safely transplant thousands of individual grafts in one session which will maximise the cosmetic impact and appearance of the procedure. When the procedure is carried out, a strip of hair is either taken from the side or back of the scalp and then transplanted into the affected area for transplantation.
How does it work?
When you have a FUT transplant, there are a number of steps that need to be taken to ensure the maximum viability of the hair follicles. Firstly, the donor area will be prepared by trimming the hair and will then have a strip of donor tissue extracted to be used in the affected area. This donor tissue is usually extracted from the back or sides of the head where the hair is usually a lot thicker. Using a specially calibrated piece of equipment, the donor tissue will be separated into individual follicles to be prepared for transplantation.
Your surgeon will then make microscopic incisions in the recipient area that will mimic the way your natural hair grows, followed by the hair follicles being transplanted into the incisions. These are placed in varying densities with the smallest amounts of grafts placed towards the front of the hairlines and the thicker and larger amounts placed further throughout the rest of the affected area. Immediately following the surgery, you will have hundreds of tiny incisions with short amounts of hair sticking out from the new grafts.
The procedure itself is minimally invasive and only requires a local anaesthetic, which means that your recovery time and risk of complications are very low.
Following the surgery, you will be provided with clear aftercare instructions in addition to medication and topical treatments to ensure that you get the best possible results.
Your donor hair is a precious resource
When having a hair transplant procedure, one of the most important things to bear in mind is that the transplantation process is used simply to relocate hair from one area of your scalp to another and that your surgeons cannot create any donor hair. Your personal hair is a finite resource and our surgeons will take the utmost care in order to safeguard and protect each individual follicle during your procedure from preparation through to transplantation. This will ensure that no hairs are lost or damaged once they have been extracted.
Your donor hair will be extracted from areas that are usually unaffected by hair loss, for example, in men, this will typically be the sides or back of the head. The individual follicles are then transplanted in batches of up to four follicles into the area that requires the transplant.
If you want to receive the most natural looking results from your restoration transplant, you cannot afford to use any clinic but the best.
Aftercare & Results
A FUT hair transplant will leave some form of scarring on your scalp but this is generally undetectable unless a patient shaves their head around the scar tissue. Following the surgery, you will be able to go home although we do recommend that you do not drive.
Your new hair will start to grow back approximately three to four months following your surgery, however, it can sometimes take at least six to eight months for your new hair to begin to make any significant cosmetic difference to the appearance of your hair.
As this is your pre-existing natural hair, simply moved from one area to another, it will grow as normal and is completely permanent. There is no need for pills and potions to maintain it, simply enjoy your natural hair.
